On
the OPAC Spreadsheet Test, after the candidate saves and exits the
test, he/she gets the message "You have not saved your test properly,
your test will not be scored." What could cause that error? |
 |
There are several possibilities:
- The candidate
did not save the file into the proper directory. Make sure that
he/she saved his/her work into the proper testing directory. Also,
make sure the candidate wrote down the testing directory shown
at the last line of the on-screen instruction.
- The candidate
saved it under the wrong name. For example, instead of saving
it as REVBUD.XLS or REVBUD.WK3, he/she saved it as REVDUD.XLS
or REVBUT.WK3 or something else.
- The candidate
did not save the file.
- This situation
affects only OPAC 5.x and earlier.

Does
OPAC System work with external software not listed in the Administrator
Manual? |
 |
There are some
softwares titles that, though we do not officially support, can still
be configured to work with OPAC. The Spreadsheet test works fine with
QuattroPro (all versions) and Lotus 1-2-3 97 Edition. The wordprocessing
tests work with Lotus Word Pro 97 as well.
Here is how
to configure QuattroPro to work with OPAC. The point is to use QuattroPro
in place of Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows:
- Go to the
OPAC Administrator program. On the menu bar, find the item Maintenance
and click on it. Then click on External Software.
- Now, a dialog
box pops up. On the left of the dialog box, there is a Software:
list. Highlight the software code L123W.
- In the Program
Full Path & Filename: box, type in (or use the Browse...
button to put in) the full path of your QuattroPro .exe filename.
- On the Status
box just above Program Full Path & Filename:,
select Active.
- Save your
changes by clicking on Save located at the bottom
of the dialog box.
- Now close
the dialog box by clicking on Close.
That's it! You
are done! Now whenever the candidate takes the OPAC Spreadsheet
test and they set the spreadsheet software to Lotus 1-2-3. OPAC
will launch QuattroPro instead.
Note:
Make sure that when the candidate saves the file they save it in
.WK3 format!
The steps for
setting up OPAC for Lotus 1-2-3 97 edition are similar.
To set up Word
Pro 97, use Word Pro 97 in place of Word Perfect 6.0 for Windows.

In
the OPAC wordprocessing tests, when the candidates get to the step
where they need to save the file, they get the message ". . .
do you want to change to a different format?" or "do you
want to update your file's format?" What is happening? |
 |
This indicates
that you may not be using the correct software code for your word
processor. For example, you may be using Word 6.0 software code for
Word 97. To check if you are using the correct software code:
- Open the
word processor you normally use for OPAC tests. On the menu bar,
go to Help-> About (the name of your
word processor...) A dialog box will pop up. It will
tell you the version of your word processor.
- Now, close
your word processor. Go to your OPAC Admin program. Go to the
menu bar. Go to Maintenance-> External
Software.
- A dialog
box pops up. On the left of the dialog box, choose the appropriate
software code. You can tell if you have chosen the right software
code from Software Description on the upper right
of the dialog box.

I
am moving OPAC to a new computer, how do I move the data files to
the new computer? |
 |
This will depend on which version of The OPAC System you are using:
OPAC 6.7 or Higher: If you are using OPAC 6.7 or higher, simply use the Data Export Wizard in the OPAC Administrator Program. Select Export Candidate Data for Import Into Another OPAC System, when beginning the wizard.
OPAC 6.0 and OPAC 6.5: Copy the folder named "Data" inside the default OPAC folder to the other OPAC folder.
OPAC 5.x and Lower: There are three types of OPAC data files. One with extension .DAT, one with extension .KEY, and one with extension .DBD; they are all in the OPAC directory. After you have installed OPAC onto the new computer or server, copy those 3 types of files into the new computer's OPAC directory. If your external software programs are located in different directories, you will need to go to the External Software screen in the OPAC Admin program to re-configure the software.
Note:
The instructions above do not apply if you are merely updating
or upgrading OPAC on the same computer. In that case, just follow
the upgrade or update instruction given to you.

I
am using OPAC 5.0 or above, and I have created some custom tests using
Test Writer. I want to have those on my new system too. |
 |
There are four
types of data files for the Test Writer. One with extension .CDX,
one with extension .DBF, one with extension .FPT, and one with extension
.OMC. After you have installed OPAC onto the new system, copy these
four types of files into the new OPAC directory.

 |
I want to increase the font size of my OPAC
tests, how do I do that? |
 |
For all the tests
in module 1 to 3 that don't require external software, you can increase
the font size by modifying the file opacw.ini in
the OPAC directory. For example, if you want to use 16 point font,
in the [Opacw] section, add the line
TestFontSize=16
If you want
to use 20 point font, then you would type:
TestFontSize=20
The steps for
adjusting to any other font size are the same. If you want to go
back to the default font size, just delete that line.
Note:
Be careful though, some of the OPAC tests, such as the Basic Math
test, would have text that goes out of bounds of the application
window if you set the font size too large.

 |
When using a word processing test with Microsoft
Word 2000, I sometimes get an error message that says, "Cannot find
OPAC.doc." What is happening? |
 |
Unlike prior
versions of Microsoft Word, Word 2000 opens each document in its own
unique window. If Word 2000 is already open when a word processing
test begins, OPAC cannot tell which document it is supposed to use.
This problem is easily solved by making sure to close Word 2000 before
using any of the OPAC word processing tests.

| |
|
 |
When completing a word processing test with
Microsoft Word 2000, I get an error message saying that OPAC cannot
score my test. Why is this? |
 |
Microsoft Office
2000 has a new "Install on Demand" feature. It is designed to ensure
that only the components the user immediately needs are installed.
In cases where OPAC cannot read a Word 2000 document, it is because
the Word 2000 file format converter tools have not been installed.
To correct this problem, simply rerun the Office 2000 setup (from
either the Office 2000 CD-ROM or your local area network [LAN]), being
sure to select the WordPerfect file converters under the Word 2000
setup. This will only install the new component, and will NOT completely
reinstall Office 2000.

What do I do when I get a security warning regarding macros? Click here to see warning screen. |
 |
If you see the macro security warning screen while a candidate is taking the word processing test, check the box next to the words "Always trust macros from this source" and then click on the Enable Macros icon at the bottom of the screen.

 |
Why do I get the message "Error extracting support files. Access denied." during setup of HPI program? |
 |
Windows is not allowing the HPI setup program to install certain Windows files or to write to the registry. The user needs to have Administrator or Owner User access to the PC in order to install HPI.

|
| |
|
 |
After installing the Hogan Personality Inventory, when starting the program the message appears "This program is not installed." |
 |
There are two possible causes for this error message. First, the logon used does not have sufficient rights to the OPAC folder. This is more common on networked systems, where the logon must have full permissions, or Full Control, to the OPAC folder. The second possibility is an incorrect path in the HPI shortcut. Check properties for the shortcut. The Target field should have the path as:
"(path to)\MSACCESS.EXE" "(path to)\chpiprog.mde"
where the (path to) is the path to the designated program. For example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ART\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" "F:\OPAC\Hogan\chpiprog.mde"

In my multi-user version of the OPAC System, why are only two candidates able to test at the same time? My license should allow more candidates to test at one time. |
 |
The default number of 'seats' available is two (2) when the system is installed (or re-installed). You need to upgrade the license in the OPAC Administrator program to setup the number of seats for which you are licensed. First, contact your account representative at Biddle Consulting Group for the correct upgrade code for your license. Next, select Utilities on the menu bar in the OPAC Administrator program, and then select the Upgrade License option. Type in the upgrade code and click Upgrade. The correct number of seats will now appear in the Current Users field. Click Close to exit the Upgrade License dialog box. You will now be able to test the maximum number of applicants your license allows. back to top

|
 |
We should be able to test more candidates that we can now. Why do candidates get a message about "Wait two minutes and try again." |
 |
This message appears when all testing seats are filled. If you have more seats than are currently filled, it may be that a previous candidate exited the OPAC System abnormally or the computer rebooted due to a power failure or other problem. When this happens, the OPAC System thinks the seat is still filled. When the message appears, have the candidate wait two minutes, and try again. During the wait period, the OPAC System will poll all testing computers it thinks are active, then empty the seats occupied by computers that are not currently testing.

 |
Why do test candidates get errors when taking tests that use Microsoft Word? Some errors occur when the tests open Word and some occur when the candidate closes Word. |
 |
If errors occur when Word is opened, the problem is usually with the Macro security setting in Word. The OPAC System uses a variety of macros to conduct tests in Word. These macros may be inhibited if the Macro Security level is set too high. To check this, open Word outside of the OPAC System. On the menu bar, select Tools | Macro | Security. Make sure the setting selected is either Medium (recommended) or Low. A setting of High will inhibit the use of macros and cause errors to occur when Word is started from within the OPAC System.
If errors occur when Word is closed following completion of a test, they may include a variety of runtime errors or invalid page fault errors. In either case, the test will probably result in a zero score. You will need to install the Word Perfect converter feature in Word. Due to the structure of Word documents, the OPAC System uses some Word Perfect techniques to score the test. This requires that the Word Perfect converter be installed. The converter is provided as a standard part of the Word program, but may not have been installed previously. To check this, complete the following steps:
- Open Word outside of the OPAC System. Word will open a blank document automatically.
- On the menu bar, select File | Save As.
- When the Save As dialog box appears, go to the Save as type field at the bottom of the screen. Using the down arrow at the right end of the field, scroll done to select Word Perfect 5.1 (for DOS) as the file type.
- Enter a File name for the file that you will remember later, and select a Save in location (such as Desktop) at the top of the screen such that you will remember the file location later.
- Now click the Save button. You will be prompted that some formatting may be lost. Go ahead and click Yes to save the document. If the Word Perfect converter is not installed, a message will appear that states, "This feature is not installed. Would you like to install it now?"
- Select Yes to install the converter. Commonly, the converter will be installed without the use of the MS Office CD, but it may be required. If so, have the MS Office CD handy.
When this process is complete, Word is now setup to work properly with the OPAC System. You may now delete the blank document file you saved earlier in Word.

 |
What level of system access rights is required for candidates taking tests in the OPAC System? |
 |
The logon used by candidates must have "Full Control" rights or "Full Permissions" to the folder where the OPAC System is installed. This includes read, write, modify, delete, and read and execute rights. Your system administrator should be able to configure the access rights for the logon used by test candidates. Potential errors include: "Cannot read IDMAP.000" or Code base errors.

When starting the Hogan Personality Inventory, why do I get an error about accessing the OLE server? |
 |
Script Blocking in Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) causes this error. You must disable the Script Blocking feature to run HPI. To do this in NAV 2000, turn off NAV Office PlugIn for Microsoft Office. In NAV 2001 or 2002, start NAV then click Options | NAV | Script Blocking | Enable Script Blocking to remove the check mark. Click OK and exit NAV.

 |
We installed an updated version of the OPAC System. Now, even though testing seems to work fine, why are all candidates getting zero scores? |
 |
Most likely the updated version was installed to a different folder than the previous version, but the shortcut to the OPAC Candidate program is still pointing to the older version. This may also be true of the shortcut to the OPAC Administrator program. Any updates should always be installed to the same location as the previous version. Reinstall the update, using the same folder as the original version. Existing candidate information and scores will not be affected.

 |
Why do all tests using Word open a blank document instead of the test document? |
 |
This is common in organizations using a document tracking system (DTS). The DTS will not allow the OPAC System to open a Word document. The computer used for testing must be detached from the network during testing. This will require that any external software required (i.e., Word, Excel, Access) be installed locally on the testing computer.

 |
Can I install the multi-user version of OPAC to several stand-alone testing computers until our server is setup? |
 |
This can be done, though it is recommended ONLY if candidates take tests on only one testing stations.
The Export Candidate Information option can be used to combine test results from multiple testing computers, but the Import Candidate Information feature will not import results for a candidate for a specific test if the candidate already has results for that test in the system. In other words, if information is imported for a candidate from one test station for a particular test, then no subsequent results for that test will be imported for that candidate for that test.

|
 |
Why do I get the message "Cannot open file IDMAP.000?" |
 |
The logon used to log onto the network or workstation has insufficient access rights to the OPAC folder. The logon used must have "Full Control" rights to the OPAC folder. You may need to have someone in your information systems department modify the access rights for this logon, or use a different logon that has "Full Control" rights to the OPAC folder.

Why can't I get the Hogan Personality Inventory admin program to work on my Citrix or Terminal Services system? |
 |
The admin program for the Hogan Personality Inventory will only run on the computer where it was installed. It is used for printing reports on the Hogan Personality Inventory for use by the Test Administrator. This program should only be installed on the Test Administrator's workstation.
